Program Title: Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Course: Current Uses and Future Directions

Target Audience: This activity is designed for Cardiac Surgeons, Cardiologists, Interventional Cardiologists, Intensive Care Specialists, Perfusionists, Pulmonologists, Respiratory Therapists, Thoracic Surgeons, and clinicians who are active in the clinical application and treatment of patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Learning Objectives:

• Provide current status of ECMO utilization in pulmonary and cardiopulmonary disease

• Introduce available technology for ECMO devices and its proper use

• Teach current protocol management for patients on ECMO

• Demonstrate role of ECMO in the medical intensive care unit for patients with acute lung injury and ARDS

• Demonstrate cannulation techniques for ECMO devices

• Elucidate future applications of ECMO

Expected Learning Outcomes:

• Understand the criteria for ECMO indications

• Learn the pulmonary and cardiopulmonary applications of ECMO

• Learn what type of equipment and instruments are required in ECMO cases

• Gain an understanding of how to manage ECMO equipment and respiratory ventilators

• Learn the algorithm for anticoagulation management

• Gain an understanding of cannulae insertion techniques for ECMO perfusion

• Develop management skills for ECMO patients in the medical intensive care unit pre- and post-ECMO perfusion
